True story? Well, it's at least the most elaborate..: "According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos. The term 420 was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. ``Waldo Steve,'' a member of the group who now owns a business in San Francisco, says the Waldos would salute each other in the school hallway and say ``420 Louis!'' The term was one of many invented by the group, but it was the one that caught on. ``It was just a joke, but it came to mean all kinds of things, like `Do you have any?' or `Do I look stoned?' '' he said. ``Parents and teachers wouldn't know what we were talking about.'' The term took root, and flourished, and spread beyond San Rafael with the assistance of the Grateful Dead and their dedicated cohort of pot-smoking fans. The Waldos decided to assert their claim to the history of the term after decades of watching it spread, mutate and be appropriated by commercial interests. The Waldos contacted Hager, and presented him with evidence of 420's history, primarily a collection of postmarked letters from the early '70s with lots of mention of 420. They also started a Web site, http://www.waldo420.com. ``We have proof, we were the first,'' Waldo Steve said. ``I mean, it's not like we wrote a book or invented anything. We just came up with a phrase. But it's kind of an honor that this emanated from San Rafael.''"

During the fourth month (April) on the twentieth is International Marijuana Day - that's where the 420 comes from. It is often written 4/20 and came about in the early 70s just after the international recognition of Earth Day which began in April, 1970.

For some people (particularly some of those within Cannabis culture, but also more widely), the number 420 (pronounced four-twenty) relates to the consumption of cannabis as a drug, and elements of its associated culture. The exact origin of the term is unknown. Cannabis users gather on April 20 ("4/20" in the United States dating shorthand) every year to celebrate and consume cannabis. 4:20p.m. (or even a.m.) is also a popular time to consume cannabis.[1] "420 friendly" is seen on advertisements for roommates, indicating that the housemates are tolerant of smoking cannabis[2].

the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.

its the shape of the numbers-
*the 0 is supposed to represent an open mouth that the cigarette goes in
*the 2 is supposed to represent the cigarette or joint- the flat line is the actual joint, the rest is the smoke curling away from it
*the 4 is like a silhouette of the person smoking: the | is the person's face, the - is the joint, and the slanted line is the smoke again.

Well, I believe it is a general trend that happened in the us. suddenly both parents were working and when the kids came home from school, (latch-key children) and no one was home they would find ways to entertain themselves. they had that two hour span before mom and dad came home from work....they would get home off the bus about four and get stoned about 4:20pm and let the high continue till mom and dad get home. that was the psychology take on it while working towards my elementary education degree.
