I've heard that she stole the word "muggle" and a lot of other ideas. Anyone know where these ideas supposedly were stolen from?

Author Nancy Stouffer, who wrote the book, "The Legend of Rah and the Muggles",claimed that she owned the trademark for the word muggle, and filed a lawsuit against Ms. Rowling, her publishers, and Universal, who released the movies.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York found Ms. Rowling not guilty of plagiarism, and fined Ms. Stouffer $50,000 for lying and doctored evidence. Ms. Stouffer appealed the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals, but the Appeals Court upheld the lower court's decision.

There are some similarities with names and characters in some of Ms. Stouffer's other works (Larry Potter and his best friend Lilly) with Ms. Rowlings (Harry Potter's mother is named Lilly; Harry Potter/Larry Potter), but they have been ruled or seen as coincidental.

Ms. Rowling has borrowed many concepts from other authors or literature (most authors are influenced this way by other authors), and even goes so far as to explain on her website and interviews how she came up with certain ideas, but she is not guilty of plagiarism.

The word "muggle" is used in a LOT of books. "The Legend Of Rah and the Muggles", "The Twits," etc all have something to do with it. But people say she copied off of Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea books, in which a young boy goes to wizard school. But she took things from a lot, though it wasn't exactly plagiariasm. You know, Latin words, mythological names, she followed Joseph Campbell's fantasy outline thing...

I'm not sure how you can steal a word, although you can plagiarize . Lets just say, whatever her inspiration, she was able to put it all together and create a timeless story for generations to come to enjoy.
