Johnny Tremain is a young man who starts out as a silversmith's apprentice until one day when he injures his right hand. Since he can no longer be a silversmith's apprentice he sets out to find something he can do with a crippled hand.

After many rejections he finds a newspaper office that has work he can do. He becomes the paper boy for the "Boston Observer" and soon finds out that it is the secret headquarters for the Sons of Liberty.

Soon he finds himself part of this dangerous protesting group. He has to memorize all the names of the members because they don't keep any written lists of names. He takes part in the major events leading up to the Revolutionary War, including the Boston Tea Party where he is the one to tell everyone when to go.

In the popular imagination (as in the novel Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes), the Sons of Liberty was a formal underground organization with recognized members and leaders. More likely, the name was an umbrella term for any men resisting new Crown taxes and laws. from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sons_of_Liberty

In courses I took, and having grown up in New England, we learned that the Sons Of Liberty was the original core group who protested the stamp act, and that the name was given by a member of England's Parliament after another member complained about the colonies, calling them children planted by England. Later, this epithet was used as a name for ALL the opponents of England's continued rule over the colonies.

Sons of LIberty was the name taken by a group of patriots in the nortern colonies (think Boston), let by Samuel Adams. It was a secret organization who protested various taxes and tarrifs levied on the colonies pre-revolutionary war. Many of the members were of the printing industry (newspapers, gazettes, etc.)
