you will have to also worry about freq and cycles. do you have an engine that can run at a preset rpm, with a governor that can handle load changes. It would be easier to run an inverter off a battery. A normal 12volt alternator that has a peak 120 amp load, could only handle a 5 amp 240volt peak load---will that be enough ?

Alternator put out 12 volts A.C. before its rectified to D.C.
You would need a Inverter to change 12 volt Ac. to 120/240 AC
I believe thats how it works anyway!
