If you are after hotel the following chains are reliable (clean, safe, comfortable) and good budget options the Ibis chain or the Travel Inns/Travel Lodge. For a bit more character the British Youth Hostel association has some really good value places ( all ages stay there, not just young people) which are more like mini hotels. You can book an en-suite room and a goo dbreakfast is provided. They will have a web site if you put Youth Hostel association and London into Google. It is a good way of meeting fellow tourists. Beware of guest houses and B & Bs in London as most are over priced and pretty grotty. I have never found one that I think is worth the money and some are really shabby. A good site to check on is tripadvisor which gives up to date accounts of accomodation by people who have stayed there. Don't use the tourist board or airport recommendations as they will just push the places that advertise with them. You will get a much better deal if you tay slightly out of the center and then get a tube or train in; even a 20 minute ride will mean you get much more for your month. The areas in the south west near the river are probably the nicest; Hampton, Richmond, Wimbledon. Nice suburbs with plenty of places to eat but only a stones throw from the centre. Realistically you will have to spend a minimum of £60-£70 on a basic en-suite room and up to £120 per night if you want a bit more luxury.

Well, cheap is relative. London is an expensive place for accommodations. Here's a couple of ideas: 1) Gumtree.com - you can find people who want to do very short sublets on their flats or rooms in flats 2) Youth hostels - The International House is a good one near Great Portland St underground and Regents Park. 3)Alpharooms.com - a hotel search for discount rooms. This is likely the most expensive of the lot.
Good luck!

Well, London is a big city. The hotel for a limited budget can be located in all corners of this megalopolis. One has to know your point of interest and preferred location in order get you the answer needed. I presume that you would like not a hotel in the very center where all hotels are bit pricey but a hotel with good transportation links to majour attractions and in your case I would suggest the Oxford hotel.
