You'd be surprised--Virgin Galactic already has several hundred people signed up (the ones who are official, that is--and they are requiring the money up front).

At this point it is extremely expensive (obvoiously!). But Bert Rutan, Branson, and others who are starting this (plus some other companies hoping to do the same) are doing is technically--and economically--sound strategy. The best way to illustrate how that could be possible is to look at history.

Theclearest example is the history of air travel (though the ame model applies to many technologies). Following the First World War, people had learned to make reasonable reliable aircraft (by standards then, anyway)--but the few "commercial " passenger aircraft were small--and VERY expensive. No one but the rich could afford to fly. But, as a few small companies started up, they created a market for those aircraft. That provided the economic base for further research and innovation--and the very fact that it was so expensive created a big incentive to innovate. Anyone who could bring down the cost by improving aircraft stood to make a lot of money--because every time the price fell, the market for air travel expanded even more. Well, about 20 year s later the first really good passenger airliner--the DC-3--was developed. It was faster, had longer range, was safer--and enormously more cost effective. But it was the decades of innovation--driven by that small market for the rich--tat made the DC-3 possiblle. Technology hasn't stopped of course--but that and other similar aircraft that everybody could afford eventually became a reality.

That's hownew technologiesnormally develop--its not a special case. And that's what this is about. giving joyrides to the rich is all well and good (I just wish I could afford a ride myself!). But the real value is the technological innovation and experience it will lead to--and in 20 years or so, maybe we'lll all be able to afford a trip into space.

I don't have $200,000 to space, but if I did, I would go.

At that price, only rich people can go. People who spend that kind of money all the time. But if enough rich people blow $200K on a flight, that will help finance the development of cheaper rides. Most people are predicting that if enough $200,000 rides are sold then the price will come way down. Maybe low enough that I could go. I hope so!

Even if I had the money, I would pass. Keep in mind, it's $200,000 now, but that's for the early adopters. Just like everything else that has ever been sold, the price will drop over time.

No, as a lot as i might want to love a experience contained in the gap go back and forth, i like the idea of no longer operating anymore extra effective. With 2 million i might want to stay off the pastime surprisingly in a more inexpensive area like Tennessee or the Philippine Islands.
