yes there is only about 13 million in metro manila but it seems like 85 million. there is probably 85 million Filipinos and other races in the Philippines.
My wife is from the Philippines and her family all have way to many children and they barely can get by. If it was not for my wife they would be even worse off, but it does not seem to bother them as this is why they have so many children.
They have large amounts of children as that is the parents way of "retirement"..they know their children will support them in their old age. I think this is a stupid selfish attitude but then again I was raised in the US and we were taught at an early age not to depend on others for what we should be doing on our own. Self reliance. Saving for a rainy day. People in the Philippines will suck you dry if you let them as they have no shame when it comes to asking for money. Its just they way they were raised.

I do not think anybody should be stopped from "duplicating" nor do I see the overpopulation as just a squatter problem. If somebody wants 19 kids, that is their (albeit insane) prerogative.
My issue stems from the discrepancy in the number of children a woman has versus the number she wants. Many of the families with tons of kids did not want to have this many babies. The rate of poverty of someone with more than five kids doubles.
While there is some truth in the idea that in the developing world, kids are more of an asset than in the industrialized world, this is not the sole reason for the abundance of people.
Here are some of the problems:
1. Lack of affordable contraceptives. Condoms cost about P12. If you are having trouble feeding your family, likely P12 is not in your budget. In the states, we could get condoms free at school or clinics. In addition, the young people (teens & 20's) I talk to here expressed that there is still a stigma in purchasing condoms.
2. Lack of information about women's health and family planning. There are very few government sponsored programs and little outreach is done.
3. There is no morning after pill, nor can one easily access a doctor to prescribe a high level of birth control to remove a potential pregnency. In addition, there is no place where a woman can obtain a legal abortion (including when her own health is at risk, or in cases or incest or rape).
**PLEASE NOTE I DO NOT WISH TO DEBATE ABORTION**
Possible solutions are there. Increase education about women's reproductive health and their rights about their own body. Teach youth (as we were in the states) about other forms of intimate activity that does not include intercourse. Have a government subsidized contraception program (i.e., norplant, birth control pills, IUD). The population is increasing at about 2.5% year. According to the Asian World Developement Bank, the country infrastructure is not able to keep up and this will continue to keep the Philiipines and its people in poverty.

Stop the ridiculous bullsh*t spouted by catholic priests and use common sense and contraception, population growth and wealth/poverty go hand in hand in the third world.
Everywhere the catholics have been in the Tropics, there is great wealth with 1% of the population, and terrible poverty for the rest.
Here there is a semblance of middle class starting to emerge, but the wages here are still too insufficient for people to enjoy quality life and free time.
Families should only have children if they can afford to bing them up with a good education, enough food and decent clothes.
All unwanted kids should be left at the steps of the nearest church, and that church should be duty bound to take care of them in the correct manner.
It's about time the child molesting leaders of this antiquated corporation took responsibilty for the suffering and poverty they have created over the last few hundred years.

I know right! They should be taught on how to do family planning! Some people even meet under fly-overs and start a family there. I watched of couples like those in a documentary. Imagine, even if they don't have decent homes to live in, even if they can't even feed themselves, they'll still make babies! I pity those children who were born into this world with irresponsible parents. They even let their kids beg in the streets.

You blame the squatters for that, i know many filipino families who are not squatters who have big families. I believe there should be wider sex education in the philippines and plenty more condoms as well as marital aid shops.

85 million in the whole Philippines, the government should give them work so that they dont have time for sex, there's a lot of filipino who dont have work, they have a lot of idle time.
If they work, they will be tired to have sex!
