Voodoo is a syncretized religion - -it's combination of the African paganism of the Dahomey reigon, combined with imagery of Roman Catholicism.

Haiti, the Voodoo capital, along with Cuba ( home of Santeria, which is like Voodoo) is one of 2 the only Third World countries in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti is riddled with poverty, disease, political corruption, illiteracy, and superstition. Does it sound like it works for them?

Some of the "magic" of Voodoo can be attributed to things like drugs. When someone is turned into a "Zombie", it is done by giving the victim a strong drug made from blowfish, toads, etc., which put the victim into a coma. The person, mistaken for dead, is buried, and later dug up by the Voodoo priest and revived. The person is usually brain damaged and traumatized from the event, leaving them in a catatonic state. Zombies are often forced to work as slaves on plantations, but usually wind up in insane asylums. There is no "magic" involved.

Robert Tallant detailed voodoo practices in his book, "The Voodoo in New Orleans". He discovered the famous oils used by voodooists, were nothing more than olive oil, essential oil, or motor oil, etc, with lables that read "Black Cat Oil", "Lucky Planet Oil", etc. put on them.

Marie LaVauex was known for her religious ceremonies...really little more than orgies where rich white men paid to "get it on" with Lavuex’s black and mulatto voodoo girl followers (more like hookers, really). So in other words, she was little more than a "Cathouse Madam". If the famous Voodoo Queen was so powerful why did she resort to blackmailing her hairdressing clients? Because she had no powers! The famous Black and White Magic by Marie Lavuex obviously wasn’t written by her but by the sellers of worthless and fake voodoo oils and powders...just colored baby oil and colored baby powder. The lodestones she gave people in the little red flannel bags weren’t magic...just magnets. Voodoo is for the superstitious.
Fidel Castro is a famous, but seldom acknowledged follower of Santeria! Castro is a brutal dictator who kills anyone who opposes him, suppresses free speech, and profits from the sale of drugs. The evil dictator has made himself a billionaire and rides in a chauffeur driven Mercedes while his peasant subjects starve and ride on bicycles. He has run his once thriving island nation into the ground to the point that Cubans will flee on homemade rafts and often die in the attempt to live in the U.S.A. If Santeria is so great, why do a nation of Santerias live in deplorable conditions? Why can’t their magic make things better? Castro allows Santeria in Cuba because he knows he can control his people through fear with it. At his inauguration, doves had been trained for weeks in advance to land on his shoulder, which the superstitious Santerios took as a sign from the "Orishas". Some hero! This is the only way to succeed at Santeria...by lying and exploiting others.

No, but I've read stuff about it. To really be into it, you have to have a proper initiation with black chickens being torn apart or goat throat slashing or something like that. I just haven't gotten around to ritual animal sacrifice yet.

Related, less-scary versions are Santeria and hoodoo, which both integrate Christianity and folk magic into their practices. Hoodoo seems like a much more practical way of doing things--less possession by orishas and all that spooky stuff.

Check out Zora Neale Hurston's folklore collections--she was initiated into a voodoo tradition and she talks a lot about it.

No he was once a Jewish messiah in line with Christians, a prophet of Allah in line with Muslims (a few Jews do not feel he ever existed, others consider he was once he was once simply one more messiah wannabe that failed in his strive and his failure was once "spiritualised" via his fans. According to wikipedia Voodo (that's to mention Haitian Voodoo is headquartered on a merging of the ideals and practices of a few West African persons with Roman Catholocism. Again in line with the equal wiki article it kind of feels to this point to across the 16th century.
