If I have an ancestor who was Italian, but that person was a cousin several times removed? Or would that mean I have Italian blood?

I wouldn't say you're Italian-American, like, your background is all Italian. I personally have some Italian ancestors (along with Irish, Scots-Irish, German, and Jewish from...somewhere in Europe.)

I'd say you're of Italian descent if you have direct relatives that are Italian (like, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.) You can say you're Italian-American if you like...but you might be in for a disagreement with those who have more claim to Italian background than you.

You are what you say you are.

What exactly do you think Italian blood is? What properties would you think "Italian blood" has that other peoples' blood doesn't?
