No, they're really tough on this. When you sign on for JSA they want to see either a letter of redundancy or dismissal. If you left of your own free will you will have to wait quite a while. It used to be 6 weeks but now I believe it's much longer. It's really tough - I was in a job I really hated but daren't leave because of this. In the end they sacked me and I was so pleased. I wasn't on benefits for very long anyway, but it's very scarey if you've got to pay rent and nothing at all coming in.

There may be something else you can claim if you have absolutely no other income - so apply for JSA anyway. Claim the job was leading you to a nervous breakdown and you had no choice. That was the truth in my case. Next thing is to doctor your CV if you possibly can so the bad job is written out totally and put it behind you like a bad dream. And be very careful in the future about taking a job if you're not sure you like the people, especially your direct line manager. It's hard, because usually you're so desperate to get a job you take the first one that's offered.
