As the other poster said, under the right conditions, it will grow all around the tree.

furthermore, lichens are more likely to be seen on trees, making the hole thing look green instead of brown. a lichen is a neat blend of moss and fungus growing together.

Infact, one cal tell how much pollution is in the air, or how much acid rain has been falling by viewing the amount of moss and lichens on a tree. Pollution kills these two as they are very sensitve.

Depending on conditions, it can grow on any side of the tree. But in general, from my own observations over the years, moss grows on the north side of trees.

It needs humidity and availability of nitrogen whether it is available on the north side or the south side. Paces in northern hemisphere get more sun on the south side, so the south side dries up faster because of sun exposure than the north side of a tree, therefore the probability of moss growth on the north side is higher than the south side.
However, plants grow better on the south side.

No - you can find it on all sides under the right circumstances.

Some kinds of moss don't grow in full sun - but in a forest - depending on the nearby undergrowth, it's possible to have moist and shady habitat even on the south side of a tree, and you'll find moss.

not only on the north side, but generally it grows mostly on the north side...still a good rule of thumb when wondering without a compass.
