Lenovo bought the Thinkpad line from IBM and still retains the durability of the Thinkpads. The use an ABS plastic case and also have a centrifugal sensor to detect shocks. The sensor works with the Active Protection System to park the hard drive. Also inlcuded is an additional layer of metal framing to protect the chasis and internal components. You can pruchase refurbished Thinkpads for around $400 from www.ibm.com under the Certified used Equipment section. But otherwise they retail starting at around $1,000.

any NAME BRAND, HP, Dell, Gateway, IBM, etc. laptop will have the same chance of failing as any of their counterparts. That is because people subject their laptops to different eviroments, different substances (water, coffee), use patterns, and so forth.
Plus you have to factor in that not all parts are made to last their useful or projected life. So you may think laptop abc is crap, but for me laptop abc is the greatest thing.

Some are more prone to failure because of design flaws.. Do your research on specific models before buying
