I have purchased a bass guitar over the internet but cannot afford an amp. I have a 1/4 jack to 3.5 inch headphones adapter. I also have a guitar lead. I have plugged it into the microphone plug but when i play nothing happens. I have checked that the volume is turned up on both guitar and computer. What am i doing wrong?
Thanks

The input level that is expected on the computer input is most likely much hotter than what you are getting from an unamplified Bass. Normally if you were using something on the computer to record, you would still use an amp (or at least a pre-amp) to work with your signal and get it up to line level. And ideally something with some EQ control as the dynamic range of unprocessed bass will most likely be more than your speakers are designed for.

You most likely want to look for a small amp designed to be used with headphones... I've not looked at these myself since back when the original Rockman's were around, but imagine there is something similar still around (and sure the old Bass Rockmans pop up on eBay for not too much and would work fine).

Unfortinatly, using your guitar as an amp takes special hardware and software. ProTools is a good program to amplify, record, and playback, but it's not the most cost friendly thing ($1000.00 - $2500.00). Try searching http://www.download.com/ to see if you can find any software, but you may need a MIDI connection.

well you need a program ie: garage band, pro tools ect...
then you plug you guitar into the line in and you should be set. this works for me on my mac.

it should work in the phone jack

plug in the microphone and make sure that works

maybe some software for free would fix it

i don't think so unless your computer has a 1/4 inch jack
