When I plug in my laptop to charge it and I'm still working on it, it still shows a battery in the tool bar, instead of showing a plug with the lightning bolt. Same when it's completely charged, it just shows a full battery instead of the plug thing. I really don't use it on battery power that much anymore because I only get a half hour out of it. Could buying a new battery solve the problem? It's a Dell Inspiron 1000.

Most batteries are supposed to give you 1.5 to 2 hours. Try powering the notebook up with just the AC adapter to see if the battery symbol goes away and you get the icon you are accustomed to seeing. If that is the case the battery may be faulty.
