it didn't come from wal-mart as far as i know. i do know it came as a set, not the 4 for a dollar silverware out of the bottom-shelf plastic bins.

I would take this set back.
But for other cleaning such as windows and mirrors or collectibles, we bought this cloth form eazeeclean.
Great for cleaning with out streaks.
You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors. They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I even waxed my car with it! I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out.

Never put silverware in a dishwasher. The cleaning solution is too harsh. Same for good china.

If it is silverware, it is probably silver plated.
If it is silver you are very naughty indeed.
Use the product I mention below.

If it is supposed to be stainless steel, take it back to the shop if possible. Stainless steel is not supposed to rust. I don't put those in the dishwasher in any case.

You might consider using a small amount of Tarnex just on the spots, according to directions. Walmart, or hardware store.

It works well on all of my silverware, earings too.

If you just got this for Christmas I would take it back. I never heard of silverware rusting.
