If you live near a Trader Joes try the "Next to Godliness" multi purpose cleaner (it is green in a clear bottle). That stuff is incredible and does not leave any residue.

If you're cleaning the ceramic top, I recommend CeramaBryte cooktop cleaner. It's mildly abrasive, use it with a cleaning pad made specifically for smoothtops (Ceramabryte sells a bright yellow pad for about $2-3.)
If it's the metal of the stove that you're cleaning, I'm wondering if you have stainless steel which smudges and smears very easily (due to a chemical reaction with body oils on our fingertips). I also recommend CeramaBryte brand Stainless Steel wipes or spray. They contain mineral oil which creates a protective barrier and should prevent water spots and some smudging..
Home Depot sells all this stuff in their appliance department or you can buy it online (ceramabryte.com). It's slightly pricey, but a little bit goes a long way. Smoothtops do require a little bit more maintenance to keep them looking nice.

Have fun with trying to keep it looking clean, black and chrome show more smears and fingerprints than anything else. Only use the cleansers made specifically for ceramic top stoves. Never use an abrasive, either in the cleaner or in the sponge. Only use a soft terry type cloth. And do not use soft scrub on it, too abrasive

I am in the cleaning business and here is our secret!
Try this cleaning cloth. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors. They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I even waxed my car with it! I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out.
