When you hit a button on the remote, it should blink before connecting with the system and having one of the lights at the bottom stay lit; 1 for the first controller and so on. If that's not happening, you might want to try re-syncing the system and controller. The manual has detailed instructions, but I believe it's as simple as hitting the sync button on the system (in the flap on the front where the SD card goes) and then hitting the sync button on the controller (under the battery cover).

If the controller connects correctly and you still can't point, are you sure you've got the sensor bar set up correctly? It should sit just above or below your screen; whichever works best for your particular screen/sitting combination. The pointer functionality works by the controller detecting infrared light sources on the sensor bar.

there was one time when I couldn't get the hand to show up on the screen. I changed the batteries inside the wiimote and it worked. Try changing your batteries in the remote.
