...because the heart is the lifeforce of our bodies & when we truly love someone with our minds it feels just as integral to our existence as the organ that sustains us.

I believe that when the mind contemplates the meaning of love, it instinctively goes towards the heart. If your heart 'skips a beat', for instance if you find that you are attracted to someone, then it means they were somehow stimulating to you, and your mind specifically. When you start to contemplate the meaning of life, and that concludes with love, or something to do with love, you'll notice that your mind naturally wants to be rested in the heart. 3000 year old Hindu philosophy states that the Lord is enshrined in the hearts of all beings, and when you meditate on this you will feel your mind and the presence of mind in your heart.

Of course we now understand the brain and hormones control emotional feeling. I wonder why the heart was used for this analogy?
I suspect it is because the heart is the only organ that can be heard. It was known before any other organ. It is the pulse of life and life is the pulse of love. Pure theory on my part.

Because the seat of the emotions is the heart in this part of the world. Why else would people say to put your heart in your work?

Well, ancient cultures believed that the heart was the seat of life. The mind, to them, was simply something you used to do practical things, like math and physics and stuff like that. But decisions pertaining to real life (like which road to take in life, which religion to follow, or which woman to marry, and really important stuff like that), according to them, were made by the heart. It is just a way of thinking. You could just as well say that love comes from between the legs. But then, you would have to hear Crazy Jane say: "Love has pitched his tent/In the mansion of excrement." (W.B. Yeats)

Hormones do all kinds of weird things to our heart. When were are "in love" the hormones make our heart beat faster which affects our breathing making us lightheaded and so on ad nausem. We feel the most alarming effect in our heart.
