The girl, and her adoptive mother died during the initial car accident... The entire movie showed their transition from this plain of existence to the next and also showed how our personal interactions and ties in this life help get us through the next. You know everyone you know in life, in your circle of life, for very specific reasons... They each do a different thing and serve a different purpose as your life serves, teaches and hinders others the same ways...
It was very reflective of the whole process involved in Egyptian Book of the dead after a pharoah is mummified theor journey only begins after they die. The book they are burried with is a guide that gets them through the process and horrors of the afterlife.
It shows that life beyond this place and its restraints and restrictions is much more than it seems... It showed religious persecution and the horrible side of death and humanity... It was a very deep film that horrified me and soothed my spirit at the very same time as I watched it and then after when I sat and thought about it it came to make sense. Some people should watch it a few times to get the whole process.
In the end... It showed their transcendence and evolution. Signified in the pure white light that surrounded them. and it also showed us how the after life is not all that different than all the things we love about this place.

Well, to sum it up in a nutshell, do you remember those different scenes that showed the mother crying when she was in that horrible scary school and the father in another scene yelling her name? Well, they where in the same place. The mother and little girl ended up in a different world with people of the past. When the father was driving with that man, do you remember him saying that the town was polluted with a harmful gas and that if exposed to it for too long, you would die? Well the mother and daugther were also exposed to the harmful gas and were in that world opposite of the real world. So after everything, the father came home without them. Why? They were now in the world of the dead past. When they came home in the jeep, they were spirits and they couldn't see the father who was laying on the couch; likewise, the father couldn't see them because he was in the world of the living. There it is in a nutshell! Hope I helped!
