Probably, it helps me get my thoughts in order and helps me see more clearly. Quite often if I am stuck and ask the question out loud I realise the answer, the act of saying it seems to close it off as final

Talking to yourself is the first steps of slipping out of reality. You're playing over a situation in your mind due to anger, confusion, guilt, etc. It becomes so real to you that you actually act out by talking to yourself or maybe making facial movements, arm movements. It's much like when you watch an exciting movie and you find yourself sitting in a peculiar position because of a scene where the actor is hanging on a cliff...or you duck when something on the TV lunges towards you, the viewer. The television has become an alternate reality for you. Such is the same with the mental images in our minds. We can replay the videos in our brain of previous experiences trying to relieve the bad feelings that come from it...(or re-live the good ones). Unfortunately, our minds dont have an easy on/off knob and sometimes it takes months/years of couseling to bring the Real reality back for us.

I am a lawyer who works for a trade union. I always prepare my cases by talking to myself. Several colleagues also talk aloud to themselves when writing letters!

Talking aloud is not a sign of madness it is a process of examination...and a useful one at that!

All my summing up arguments are rehearsed in this way...often during breakfast on the day I am to present them!

Not necessarily, I find talking aloud helps me concentrate! It's a good way of clarifying your thoughts... i also find writing a page or two (like a journal) before bed really helpful if i've a lot on my mind, cos it just transfers those thoughts away.

No, by talking to myself I am keeping myself company (I work alone) and helping myself to think through whatever it is I'm doing...saying things aloud seems to help that.
