Im getting ready to recaulk the seams of my shower enclosure. I'd be interested in knowing the best way to remove the old and prep the surface before putting the new stuff on..

what i did was just pull up the old one using a knife or a blade of some sort, careful not to scratch the tile or whatever, then wash the area with a bleach and sudsy mixture using a brush. scrub the area hard so all mold and dirt will come off. let that dry! then after it has drid the apply the new caulk with an applicator or what i did was squeezed it out from the caulk gun onto the areas and spread it with my finger.

Remove the old caulk with a razor (be careful!) insuring that ALL the caulk is removed. This is quit a chore, but get it all. It's labor intensive, but keep at it. even if it takes all day. Also try a new scotch pad. That may help. When recaulking...use as little caulk as needed. I like to keep a roll of toilet paper at hand to keep the work and hands cleaned as you go. Just flush each wiped tissue into the toilet as you go. This is a labor saver.

Use something to loosen the old caulk ( I used to use a popsicle stick) just something that isn't going to scratch the porcelin or tile.
It pulls out really easily.
Make sure its all clean, free of dirt, soap scum and fungus.
Once it is clean just run a bead along the old line and use a damp rag to smooth it out ( although your finger works well too but then you have to get the caulking compound off)
Have fun on your weekend project :)

I have just done ours, I used those narrow nosed pincers to grab and pull off the old calking,
Also I bought different gadgets for smoothing the calking on, but found that using my finger was much better. Keep a wet cloth handy and wipe off any stray calking, it comes off very easily while still wet.

we used an old credit card so there would be no scratching. i would suggest you get the tinted caulk to match the colors in your room, it really stands out nice and doesn't look so dirty. once you start caulking dont lift the gun until you are finished your lenghth, keeps it looking cleaner, not slopped. good luck
