I suspect no one knows "why" the universe exists. I can say that if it did not exist we would not be here to ask the question.
Through a series of unlikely events we ARE here. Enjoy yourself, help people, hurt no one, create something better, be healthy. You make the "why" anything you want.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Reason is a consequence of existence.
If existence was a circle, reason would be just a dot in that circle.
You cannot expect to explain existence with reason.
It's like in the story of the Blind Men and the Elephant.
In the story, six blind men approached the elephant and each one of them only grasped part of the elephant. They argued with each other about what the elephant really looked like. They claimed the elephant is like a wall(body), like spear(tooth), like a snake(nose), like a tree(foot), like a fan(throwing water), or like a rope(tail).
We are blind when we look at universe and existence. Anyone can have his own explanation but it probably won't be right.
In my blindness I feel that we are here to play our part in this ongoing theatrical called life. And when we are ready to step of the stage to be happy with what we have done.

We create our own reason for living by choice, or default. Some would argue that beyond this explanation lies a divergence. One being some mystical spiritual reason. The second being a primal "earthy" reason such as survival of our species.
Go with the first explanation of "mysticism" and find yourself donating your time, talents and energy to a non-profit organization. Knock yourself out!
Or you could lean towards survival or our species and have a fun time trying to spread your seed! knock yourself out (just not by yourself in this scenario!)

The universe exists because it can. We are here because we can exist in this universe. Both according to the law that states "Whatever can be, must be."

The reason we are all here, is to answer that very question for ourselves & the purpose of life is different for everyone of us.

I believe we were set here on this earth to be with God. Yes its a quite different subject but you must believe how one believes. We are here to live our live the best way we can and then meet in the hereafter.
