Other than the 2 mentioned so far. And I agree "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart is an all time great in those terms. Also consider these as possibilities of movies where the main character has profound personal growth. In no particular order: My Life - Michael Keaton & Nicole Kidman The Last Samarai - Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe Life or Something Like it - Angelina Jolie Seven Years in Tibet - Brad Pitt, David Thewliss (bit of a slow life change rather than sudden) Dances with Wolves - Kevin Costner (again more of a slow change) The Matrix - in a weird sci fi kind of way Fight Club - Brad Pitt & Edward Norton - pretty violent though and perhaps a bit nihilistic for what you want. And in a bizarre sort of way even Pretty Woman could fit that theme. Good luck.

My favorite is Defending My Life it has Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks in it. It is funny but makes you think about death and dying.
