They fatten up and find someplace warm to hole up- they curl into a ball and sleep. That is IF it gets cold enough. Opossums are just moving up into new colder territories (last 15 yrs or so) and can be found in the upper US. There used to be no Opossums here (central WI) 10 yrs ago, and now I have seen quite a few. I am not sure if there are any reports in Canada. They do get frostbite quite easily, esp on their tail and ears and don't do well in cold.

According to:
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/critter/mammal/opossum.htm

"Opossums fatten up on food before winter arrives, but do not spend all winter in the den. They will come out to look for food and will eat mice, rabbits, birds and garbage. Because they are not adapted to winter, their tail and ear tips sometimes freeze - ouch! "
