If the size of the hole is specified, ie 3x6x2 and you dig half of it in one day, dig the other half another day, you have one complete hole.

If you dig hole and then dig the second half somewhere else you end up with 2 holes.

it would depend if you dug the second half at the bottom of the first half in which case you have one hole other wise you have two holes
