Use rubbing alcohol on the cool iron. The alcohol will remove the gunk and evaporate, and the remaining water will evaporate in time.

Let it sit for 30 minutes after cooling.

Here's what you do to remove the hair product buildup on your curling iron: Take some cotton balls soaked with isopropyl alcohol and wringing out the excess alcohol, rub the moistened cotton ball on the slightly warmed unplugged curling iron. If you have a lot of build up, it make take several attempts to remove it. I found this tip in a beauty mag years ago and it works. Good Luck!

I would use a warm, wet washcloth, sprinkle some baking soda on it, and rub it back and forth, without getting it dripping wet. This make take a few times, but once you're done, you need to let it dry overnight.
