bad when a good friend is upset and you want to help them but not sure how?

always.i can (hopefully speaking) give advise on many subjects.i never want to see my friends hurtin.that hurts me more when they wont talk.listening & talking are underrated in todays society.conversation has died in the last twenty years.i believe talking is the best form of communication for friends & the planet.british telecom got one thing right "its good to talk"

It always makes me feel bad....to feel another's pain and to not be able to take that feeling away.
Sometimes being a real friend means not having all the answers...but simply having the time and the shoulder to lean on....the compassion and the understanding....and the ability to just listen....

most of the time when i have a friend who is really upset i have no idea what to say to comfort them and then after that i feel really guilty
not usually comfortable comforting people

Yes, at some point. But I often just leave them alone not to make things worst. I am not a very good adviser honestly.

Yes, it does. Sometimes the best way to help out, is to just chat with them a little. That way they don't feel so alone. : )

Yes...and I stand by them...near...don't say nothing...just make sure that my friend knows that I'm for her/him.
