My advice is this:

1. Don't make it into a really big deal because children can sense that and it will stress them out, too, and make the situation tougher.

2. Don't meet at home or in a quiet place like a restaurant. Instead, do something fun all together, like going to the batting cages, riding go-carts, going swimming, etc.

3. Don't show a lot of affection with your partner. Just enjoy all being together, and make it a fun time for the child.

4. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't go perfectly. These things take time, and anyone who tells you different is not being truthful.

Good luck! It'll be fine.

Ask his dad what he likes doing best and make arrangement's to do this a day just for him, dont make a big deal out of it tell him you just want to be a friend thats all.even at his age he sees you as someone taking his dad away from him,he may be thinking you are tring to take his moms place, buy him a small gift as well tell him its just a gift for a friend.good luck.

8 yr. old is a tantrum stage, just give the 8 yr old a gift and see if the child likes to rollerskate, parks, magazines, cds, dvds
watch a good dvd movie with em and make popcorn.

try to be yourself..i was in the same situation and a child can detect the fake...stand your grounds but be firm with it because you have to remember that your relationship also depends on it..get to know the kid so that you can work from there...pay attention to the child so that they do not feel like you are taking a parent away from them but instead you are just tring to be another person they can depend on
