I'm not sure that your "if" is right. We lose matter to space, where random peices of the atmosphere go away.

Don't you mean compared to how much gravity the sun has? In both cases, most of any matter gained is burned.

I have the feeling that little, if any, mass actually falls into the sun. Getting close to the sun means vaporization and the solar wind would then simply blow the resulting atoms away from the sun.

I would be surprised if any debris made it to the sun - it would be vaporated before it could actually reach the sun

None, things vapourise before they get anywhere near the sun's surface.
