This should have been written like this

x/2 = 3x/4 + 5

because the way you have it makes it look like the denominator for the right side is 4+5.

2x/4 = 3x/4 + 5

2x/4 - 3x/4 = 3x/4 - 3x/4 + 5

-x/4 = 5

-x/4 ^ 4 = 5 ^ 4

-x = 20

x = -20

First, find the LCD of the right side. One easy way to do this is to think that 5 is 20/4. Then you can combine like terms of the right as,
(3x+20)/4

But the left side is x/2 so you can think of this as 2x/4 also because you need a common denominator.

so 2x/4 = (3x +20)/4.

Cancel 4 ( Convince yourself you can do this, clue: cross x and cancel) Then, you are left with 2x = 3x + 20

Rearrange, combine 3x and 2x, subtract 5 and you get

-20 = 3x-2x or x = - 20

1-subtract the 5 from both sides
2-divide by x/2 on both sides
3-multiply 3x/4 by 2/x the product here is 3/2 which is NOT equal to -5

you're welcome

x=6x/4+5
x-10=6x/4
4x-40=6x
2x=-40
x=-20
