I think most people are not fired for any good reason; usually, the boss just finds out later that the worker doesn't fit in, there may be a personality conflict or the expectations by the boss (or even the employee) might have been too high.
There are many firings and reprisals as a result of workplace bullying and mobbing. It is believed that 1 in 5 workers have experienced this in their workplaces.
Other times, workers may be fired due to economic slowdown or restructuring of the firm. My husband lost his job one time because two companies, including the one he was working in, were merging and they needed to shrink the administration department he was employed in.
Sometimes, the company is inspired by pure nepotism or favoritism. They learn their nephew is looking for a job and there are no current openings in the company, so the company creates one by getting rid of the "least favoured" employee on some lame excuse, then hiring the nephew.
In about 5% of the cases, the firing is for cause: employee theft, breach of confidentiality, assault, vacating job duties, etc.

1. Computers--posting inappropriate or searching inappropriate stuff./ Bosses really watch this now, and even hire people just to watch what the worker is doing on the Web & eMail.

Lies, Theft, laziness, dis-respect, threatening behavior
(1)Saying that something is other than what it is
(2)Theft, claim payment for time and you were not there, taking company material for personal use.
(3)fail to come to work, does not do work when on the job
