My carbourater is failing. My car needs to be started 3-4 times before it stops stalling. Can anyone tell me my options on how to fix this problem, and normal associated costs?

Thanks!

I rebuilt the engine 60,000 kms ago, and replaced the choke in 2003. Perhaps it is time for am overhaul of my carb.

LOL For those people who think my car is fuel injection....whatever...I'd have to be pretty stupid to own a car for 7 years and not know if I have a carb!

Spray carb cleaner in the carb while it is running, give your car a full tuneup, try adjusting the lean/rich mixture screws and also turn up the idle screw, put on a new clean air filter.

for the informnation of everyone in 1988 caprices still had carborators fuel injection did not start being put in until later 1988. i think the first 3 months of 1988 were carberated after that fuel injection. the rochester 4 barrels had lots of issues with stalling , making the car buck like a bucking bronco. i had similer problems with my 1985 and i ended up replacing it with a remanufactured one and had no trouble after that. put that same carb on a1988 i bought which had a carb with a bad throttle position sensor in it got it adjusted by someone who really knew what he was doing and got 22 miles per gallon

Do you have a carbourator or is it a throttle body fuel injection?

Your right, you should know what your car has but a lot of people don't. And, please forgive me for not looking into my crystal ball to know you had your car for 7 years. Besides, it looks like a carb and a friend of mine had a Caprice around the same year with a throttle body. I was just trying to help!

Get a rebuilt unit for about $300-400.

sounds like the choke is out of adjustment. when was the last tune up done? best thing would be to rebuild the carb. Complete overhaul

May be just the choke and not the whole carb. First step would be to try adjusting.

Sounds like a sticky float or float valve in the Carb. Sometimes tapping the side of the carb with a wrench helps. Might need a good Carb cleaning.

Sounds like the choke pull-off is bad. Fairly easy to check and replace.

Sounds more like the cold start system (automatic choke) needs some attention. Start there.

Chech fuel pressure from the pump first before you condem the carburator.
