Since spring will soon be upon us and I need extra time planning with college and a running a daycare I need some advice on what type of plants are easy for children to start from seeds. They must need little care and little sunlight for my porch and the windows only get sun about 1/3 of the day. Also something with a flower or fruit so that the children can learn from it would be great as well. Also what hanging plants? I have two windows that recieve about the same sunlight that have hooks in the ceiling... what type of plants are good to hang in windows? I live in Pa and the plants cant be poisonous.

I know these are not from seeds, but they are young plants and worth trying.

I work at a plant nursery, so this one I know pretty well-
try something simple like berry plants (strawberries can be grown in a pot or in the ground, some are even more known for their bloom than their fruit, which would give you the ornamental aspect along with the fruit, which the kids love to pick & eat. Also, blueberries are relatively easy. They can also be grown in a pot if you wish. They do require a more acid soil and could benefit from a little peat moss.), or another sort of ground cover (lingonberries, herbs, kinnikinnik, wintergreen, etc). Also, if you have the space and patience for it, try a mini dwarf fruit tree. Some varieties are grafted onto a mini dwarf rootstock, keeping them at approx. 4-6 ft at maturity (you can also try a "columnar" apple tree which is also in a mini dwarf rootstock). Please keep in mind that all these different types of plants and trees have different requirements for soil/sun/etc. Strawberries and blueberries can be marginal, being ok with partial or dappled shade, but some need full sun (about 6 hrs worth per day). Apples also need full sun mostly. The kids should get a kick out of having their own "mini garden." In my experience as both a customer service rep and a paraeducator, they love the sense of accomplishment they get from being a part of this process.

My job has its own website. More selections for kid-friendly plants hop on over to our site: www.raintreenursery.com

Good luck!
