I would not recommend doing this for long periods of time. Babies can start to go bald, or worse, get a flat spot on their soft skulls. It can become so serious that the child would later need to wear a special helmet device to get the head back to its normal shape.
As for tummy time, he is at the right age to start rolling over and even makes some attempts at crawling. If you don't let him have the freedom of movement and always have him strapped in his carseat, he won't develop the muscles needed to do these things. Put down some new toys and a soft quilt and let him explore the world.

The girl I'm dating has a baby, and we would keep him in his carseat all the time, he slept so much better.
I found an article a couple weeks ago that says that the reasons babys sleep so well in car seats is because it tilts their head forward and restricts their air flow, causing them to get drowsy and sleep.
We kept him in the car seat more often than has basonet, and he slept AND grew like a champ...he's almost 8 months and 12 month old clothes often don't fit, he's healthy and strong, but the science shows that it COULD be harmful to do this.
Baby's are meant to sleep on their backs.
One thing I started doing, and still do to keep him sleeping is a combination. When it's naptime/sleeptime overfeed the kid, so he/she can't eat another drop.
Then put on a new diaper, then wrap him SUPER tight in a flexible blanket, with his arms pinned at his sides so he can't move...The baby will feel so secure, so warm and happy...Caleb never wakes us up at night, who gets to sleep all night with an infant? If he's not wrapped, or not wrapped tight enough, he'll wake us up every couple of hours.
Caleb hated and still hates tummy time as well, but it's good for the baby to do it anyway.
Try putting him in different things, swings, those little vibrating seats, etc.
Or, the car seat is just fine, just keep an eye on him when he's in it to make sure he's getting plenty of air and blood to the brain...if he is, then don't worry about it.
We used to roll up Caleb and put him in his carseat over night because he slept so well, and the only result was an energetic happy baby in the morning.

There was a recent study published out of Australia that found that babies left in their carseats for long periods of time had a higher risk of death. It has to do with the angle that the baby is positioned in and it makes it harder to breath in good amounts of oxygen.

Car seats endanger sleeping babies' breathing: study
Last Updated: Friday, December 8, 2006 | 10:59 AM ET
CBC News
Parents should not leave babies sleeping unattended in standard car safety seats because it may trigger serious breathing problems, a new study suggests.
Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand studied 43 reports of babies who suffered a lack of oxygen — nine had been left to sleep in their car seats.
Parents described their children, who had been left to rest in the car seats, as "blue," "scrunched up" and "not breathing." The babies, who ranged in age from three days to six months, all recovered after the event.
The study, published in this week's British Medical Journal, said the positioning of the infant in the car seat caused a narrowing of the upper airways.
Prof. Alistair Gunn noted the children's heads were tilted forward with their jaws pressing down on their chests. Throat muscles relaxed when the infants were sleeping, exacerbating the problem.
Researchers also observed that half of the mothers in the study smoked, making the infants vulnerable to hypoxia or poor oxygenation.

Just becareful that the baby's head does not get flat on the back. There is not really a way for the baby to lay on the side of his head while he is in the carseat. But other than that, he should be fine. My daughter hated her carseat, so she was only in it when we went somewhere, so I am not the expert on this one.

It is not good for baby...U can leave him in there for a few minutes at a time and when hes awake and alert but dont let him fall asleep in there...Newborns and small babies heads flop onto there chest when sleeping in car seats which cuts off there oxygen supply...This is also not good for the babys neck,as he grows the muscles in his neck are developing and getting stronger and the car seat will cause him to develop torticollis and other neck issues..I suggest if he trys falling asleep move him to the crib or floor...Congrats on the new one!!

You can answer this question yourself. The baby is very young, and needs proper development. you need to be more well rounded with the different things, like the tummy time, and other tasks. Mix it up, and do whats best for the baby. Remember, the baby won't tell you that he/she is hurting in a specific area.

Make sure to balance the carseat time with physical interaction. Babies need that to thrive. Try the swing also. If he is content then thats good.

My 7-month old slept in his carseat until he was about 5 months old. We put it right in his crib and he'd sleep SO MUCH BETTER! Ask your pediatrician if the baby might have acid reflux - that was my son's problem - he was so much more comfy at an angle. I don't know how safe it is...and I'd never suggest it if it weren't safe...but my son was fine. Good luck!

It's okay for short time periods. As long as you are giving him plenty of tummy time. Also it may make it harder to get him to sleep in his crin if he's always sleeping in his carseat.

as long as she's close to you and he or she's delicate, there is not any difficulty with that. My 6 month previous hated his bassinet and does no longer sleep in it in any respect, so he slept in both his bouncy seat or swing for the first few months of existence. Now, he finally will sleep in his own mattress thank God!! He become colic although so he become no longer an truly chuffed infant besides. as long as your infant is secure and delicate, that is all that concerns. that's no longer incorrect to enable her sleep like that. strong success!!
