The short answer is, it depends.

Depending on the nature of your discomfort, and your talents, there are lots of opportunities for sensitive people. Many occupations allow for the solitary practitioner...everything from artists to accountants.

If you are overwhelmed by numbers of people, but not uncomfortable with one or two, you may find a calling in counseling or another "therapeutic" field. Your sensitivity to other people will actually be an asset in these fields. The only thing to be careful of is that if you're too empathic and can't stay properly detached, you shouldn't go into a "helping" profession as part of your own therapy.

But, you have lots of options. If I knew a little more about your specific interests, I could offer more targeted advice. (I have a couple books that might help, I'll look them up and link them here.)

Just as an aside: A couple of the suggestions here are scary. Lawyers and sales people who lack confidence dealing with other people, will find severe limits on how far they can progress in their fields. Highly sensitive teachers, while occassionally VERY successful, must be especially careful to avoid burn out. If you're easily overwhelemed by people...putting yourself at the front of a room full of emotionally charged, often confrontational, young people, can be exhausting.

Perhaps, you should try to find out why you are overly sensitive. You may be suffering from a form of depression or anxiety, which is highly treatable. If not, a job in the arts is probably the best. Other jobs may be fine if you are not dealing directly with people all the time.

People are crazy. I've grown to accept that. I am self-employed and deal with the public all the time and their personalities differ as much as anything else. At first, I let things affect me, but over time I learned not to let their comments or tempers bother me, as many of the people I work with have serious legal issues (civil matters) which have had major impact on their lives. Others have disabilities, which make them irritable and sensitive to anything I (or anybody else) says to them.

But it is rewarding when somebody I work with turns out to be interesting and passionate and a great person to know, which happens more than I originally believed. I have gained many valuable friendships over the years through my work - even though I entered it feeling overly sensitive to how others felt about me. I discovered in most instances, it was best not to take anything personally and just move on.

People like that need counseling. There will not be a job that is good for someone like that because a lot jobs require that one accepts constructive criticism without getting offended. Often times people who are overly sensitive have a very hard time with that.

Counsellor - helps to be overly intuitive of other people

Sales - sensitive people can often tell when they are actually winning people over or not

Spiritual leader - often includes working with a spiritually needy group of people who want a sensitive leader

Social Services - helping other people (i.e. disabled, those who are a bit depressed, head injured, etc.) in various different ways who rely on people who are sensitive to their needs

Interviewer - often the more sensitive ones are able to get the better sensationalistic stories

and many many more

Overly sensitive that is weird - however a sensitive person might make a good teacher, psychiatrist, doctor, or lawyer to name a few professions. Also it would be a good characteristic in an entreprenuer and/or salesperson.

Good Luck!!!
