The new law would put parents in jail for up to a year if they discipline their children who are under four years old by striking them.

The person who introduced the bill, San Francisco Bay-area Democrat Assemblywoman Sally Lieber , has no children herself.

Is it the role of government to tell parents how to discipline their own children? Obvious physical abuse is not the issue, there are laws against that already in place.
Would a mere slap on the hand or backside warrant being charged with a misdemeanor and some jail time?

That figures...another FAAAR-LEFT wing-nut idea with a hidden agenda. The government escalated the decline of parental rights when they began to fund so-called early education programs like Headstart...now, that's not even good enough. Communists in our government want to remove ANY authority we have with our children BEFORE they start to pre-school. If a parent is not able to lovingly correct or spank a bottom before the age of 4 years, I pity the child and the parents who will have to try to maintain order in that household afterward. And...such wierdos in power understand that. Their goal is for the parent to have even less control in their own home and to have that control over the child (viewed by communists to be THIER property) further transferred to them. It is just another way to increase control over our children. WHY? Because they are looking 20 years down the road hoping to foster a more "state-controlled" and subservient American society. By then, most of those who think otherwise will be dead or made otherwise powerless to object. I fear for this nation if we don't awaken and smell the stink.

Hey, Tiberius, I wondered how long it would take someone to post that question here, I just saw it a couple hours ago on FoxNews. Not only should the bill *not* be passed, the legislator who proposed it ought to be impeached. So many of today's problems in society occur just because parents *don't* spank, and their children grow up not realizing they are accountable for their actions. There are enough laws on the books to prosecute parents who abuse children, and by abuse I mean beating the crap out of them, or using an implement other than a bare hand. If the Government spent as much of its resources on building new schools, new roads, teacher salaries and the things the government is supposed to do, and stayed out of our homes and bedrooms, we'd be a lot better off. I was born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area for all but one of my first 21 years. California used to be a great place to live, great schools, good roads (I'm obviously dating myself to being almost 60), but it's been going down hill for the past 2-3 decades. When I left California for Texas in 1983, I was sure I would return there to live and retire. Visiting there regularly, I quickly realized leaving was the best thing I could have done for myself, and it's precisely for reasons like the above that I'm glad I did leave. After Texas and Virginia, and now retired to North Carolina where I doubt something so ridiculous will be proposed for at least another three decades (and by then I'll not be around anymore). Great question! Peace out!

I'm a Democrat and I do not support this bill.
I think that anyone who DOES NOT allow parents the right to discipline their children (even those under the age of four) should be thrown into jail...@ss first!

It's a great law.

Then maybe the government can:
- tell us how much to feed the children
- make laws on what we should eat for our meals and snacks
- legislate when we should go to bed and wake up
- regulate our consumption of caffiene and alcohol
- legislate where we can live, what our jobs are, what we can think and say, what our Christmas and birthday presents should be, etc.

Then we could be free - just like the Eloi!

Noooooo when will the government learn? How much do we want the government to control our lives? Passing this law takes what you know about your child and how to raise him or her out of your hands and into the almighty DC's. Please don't let this pass people.

If this law passes it would be a crime in itself. The government should not ever have the right to tell parents how to raise their children. Abuse is one thing discipline is another. This is the kind of Liberal crap that makes me just hate liberals especially the stupid ones elected to office.

No. It is not the governments place to punish the punishers any more than it should tell a woman what she is allowed to do to her own body.
On the other hand, it's a known fact that striking young children creates a violent adult....it should be the community to resolve this, though.

No but I can say that if it does, we'll have a lot of parents in jail. It is totally preposterous and these libs are getting way out of hand. What next? They'd better keep their damned laws out of my home!!!!

It's already a problem, with all the "Time Out" These Libs want everything just so neat and tidy....Get Real....Once in awhile a Kid needs a good Backhand.....My son was 6'4" 240# when he was 14....Time Out wasnt going to do it for him....but a well placed Right did the job...didn't hurt them or me....

Time for the Libs to stop legislating Morals.....

Unless the government wants to support the children, they should not have to tell parents how to raise them.
