My best friend is 6 months pregnant and is having a few scares. She has recently been passing blood clots. When it happens she calls the Dr. and she just tells her to go to the emergency room/labor and delivery. Once she gets there, they monitor her and she is just fine and dandy. They just say "if it happens again, come back". Well it has been happening but they don't tell her the possibilites of what could be happening or why its happening. Has anyone gone though this? Also, she had some milky white stuff drop down while she was in the restroom. It happened twice, she went to the emergency room, they did the test to see if it was the amniotic fluid, and it was incunclusive. The stick should have been blue, hers was blueish green.NEED SOME HELP!!

The milky white stuff could have been her mucous plug, sometimes that happens and it doesn't necessarily mean labor is imminent. More worrisome are the blood clots. Do they look like "old" blood or are they bright red? She could have a marginal placenta previa which means the edge of the placenta is partially covering the cervix (opening where baby comes out). As the baby grows, the uterus expands and allows the edge of the placenta to come loose and causes bleeding. This is less serious than a complete placenta previa in which the placenta completely covers the cervix. An abruption is where the placenta comes loose from the uterine wall; there can be a partial abruption that can seal over or a complete abruption which is a life threatening event for both the mother and fetus. In any event, your friend should have an ultrasound to rule out either of these conditions.

If she is indeed passing clots she should be admitted to the hospital. I suspect she is having a problem with her placenta which could in turn become very dangerous for her and the unborn child. I am surprised the hospital did not take things more seriously. Here in the UK if a woman presented herself as passing clots 6 months into a pregnancy then the doctors would probably make her stay in the hospital until the birth of the baby.

Passing blood clots while pregnant is not okay. This can indicate placental abruption or placenta previa. She needs to go back to the hospital and demand some answers.

She needs to not give up until she finds a doctor who can give her a definate answer. It is always the squeeky wheel that gets the grease, make sure she is speaking up and demanding that she gets answers.
