It doesn't have to be paper, you can get anything you want.

Paper is the traditional first anniversary gift, do something more meaningful/cherishable than just a check/gift certificate

buy a nice family bible and sign and dedicate and date the inner page, Im not that religious myself but it is a nice gift

Perhaps a scrapbook/memento book for her to store the family milestones in i.e child births, first home
This will give something to cherish and look back on years from now when you celebrate your 20th and beyond...

The massage gift certificate is a really good idea. Put it in a box with 365 paper hearts (for each day you've been married)-- you can buy valentine hearts instead of cutting them all out yourself.

I would say a nice romantic evening. Me and my husband were expecting our second child and at the time he was getting ready to leave on deployment before our anniversary. So we just had a nice dinner at a nice restaurant and reflected on the year that flew by. Your situation is probably different from my mine, but just being able to make it to your first anniversary is something to be grateful for. Cherish the day and toast to the many years that will hopefully come to the both of you.

Forget paper. Do something romantic, like buying her gifts of jewelry and chocolates. Take her out for a fine candlelit dinner and spend the night at a good B&B. You'll enjoy it too.

Here are some possible paper gifts (that I would like at least!)
1. Stocks in her favorite company
2. Title to a car or house
3. A beautiful painting
4. A lovely vacation that you've planned and make it into a collage for her to look forward to.

That's all I can come up with for now...

The gift certificate sounds like a nice option. Most gals these days don't really adhere to the formal dictates of yester-year and it's not really important that you do either. What's more important is that you remember and give her a thoughtful loving gift that is suited to her.

My husband and I had a characature done on our first anniversary. I had just found out I was pregnant with our first baby, and we were trying to budget. Went out to dinner and there was a little stand set up with a guy who would draw you, was not more than $20- it was 'paper' and it is an awesome keepsake. Local outdoor malls have them, do an online search in your area....good luck!!

Write her a check.

Write a poem, then fold the paper it's on into a paper airplane and float it to her. Decorate the outside with hearts and write "Love Express" on the 'fuselage' part.

An origami book from Barnes and Noble, with lots of pretty paper for folding. Or any other book, paper again, you know!

Or perhaps some really cute paper stationery or scrapbooking supplies.

Get one of those multi-colored notepads, and make little "coupons" for her to cash in. Make them for candlelight dinner, candlelight bath with massage .....etc. Don't go overboard with the suggestions, and be sure that they are geared more towards her romantic / pleasure side. Guaranteed for her to enjoy !!!
