It depends on what you mean. Overall, the Bible is the most read book, but it has a head start having been around for hundreds of years. Also, the most read books are not always the best.

In addition, in the past ten years Harry Potter has been the most sucessful, but various editions of the complete works of shakespeare have usurped its crown over the past 20 years.

As well as this, book reading is declining. We don't actually know whether these books are read, just if they're bought. It could be that in actual fact, everyone in Britian has borrowed a copy of a certain book from a library and read it at home.

But if your question strives to think of which books to read, it entirely depends on your personality. Pick one up and see if you lose yourself in it. If not, try another.

Another one of the best selling books in recent years is the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Adding a personal opinion, I think some of the best books are the Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy books. They are so unique and when you read them you know nothing can be quite the same again.

If you are more into crime novels, Arthur Conan Doyle has written plenty of good books on the subject.

There's a whole world of books out there, and as has been said,
Some books are undeservedly forgotten,
None are undeservedly remembered.

Sorry for ramnbling, and I hope it helps.
