Note: I am not allowed to do baking soda and vinegar.

Very Simple. Just 2 Nails. 2 inches long, if possible.

The chemical reaction for your project is called RUSTING or a more chemically restrictive term - OXIDATION reaction.

One nail is exposed to air and water. The other second nail is dipped in unused oil-motor oil or any oil.

The first nail will rust (say, give it 2 days for visible rusting ). You can hasten the rusting by scratching the nail or cutting into it
( but not totally cut off)
The other nail, ( after wiping off the oil) should not have the orange or red-orange colored rust. It should have a nice metallic sheen to it.

Then, you can scrape off some of the rust in the first nail and put into a beaker or test tube. Add a very, very mild acid solution ( 0.05M ) of HCl (hydrocholic acid). You should see a yellow or orange colored solution.

This is where your experiment will differ from others, even though some will do the same experiment. Explain that the reaction has occurred that converted the Metallic iron without color into a ferric or ferrous CATION, which is colored.
Thus, a chemical reaction has occurred. RUSTING is an OXIDATION reaction. Oxidation means the metal has lost electron forming a positive cation.

vinegar and baking soda... Mix a small amount of each in a plastic bottle and quickly place a balloon over the top. the gas made from the tow compounds will inflate the balloon. top perfect the experiment...practice at home using a little more of each ingredient each time until you get the correct amount needed.

A good one that I used to use with my sixth grade students is vinegar and antacid tablets. You can also use antacid tablets in water with water in film canister to show the affects of gas and pressure...great for volcanoes.
