I started giving my son water in a sippy cup at 3 month. He was still mainly on breastmilk though.

I was told after 3 months and only in small amounts, like a few sips to cure hiccups. I have given my 4 month old son water twice, once for hiccups because he was unable to nurse and I had no pumped milk. Once he got rid of those hiccups he nursed. Once I gave him water because I knew he was full and wanted to suck on the bottle more (I was nursing, now I pump) and he doesn't take a pacifier. I figured a little water was better than sucking on air. He fell asleep after about 4-5 sucks.

I would never give water as a meal replacement.

Once with my first child I was out and forgot forumla when she was 5 months old. I was at a friends house with a baby, but hers was on regular formula, mine on soy. I gave her a bottle of water to hold her over for 15 minutes till we got home.

In other words water is OK when used in small amounts for a specific reason. There is no reason to give water in place of food or milk, this is not good for any baby.

Its okay for your infant to have a couple sips of water no more than an once a day. Never use it as a meal replacement. My twins are 10 months old and eating stage three foods and the doctors say that no more than four ounces even at that age

Infants can have water at any time but it isn't recommended in tell they are about 6 months unless recommended by your Dr. That is because they need the nutrients in breast milk or formula and the water makes them not eat as much. I would ask your Dr.

After one year old. Water doesn't supply them with anything their body needs to grow. Since they are on a liquid diet anyway with all the milk they drink, they are not dehydrated and don't need water. But after one they start to eat foods that are more solid and they need water.

They really don't need extra water until they are done full-time breast-feeding or off formula. You can dilute their juice with water when their doctor tells you that you can give it to them. Water is not good for infants. My son's doctor told me when my son was sick to give nothing but pedialyte because the electrolytes help aid in brain development.

In the hospital infants are given sugar water. This is not a very good practice. More information is available on books regarding breastfeeding. Over all breast milk to a baby is what cow's milk is to a calf. Refer to La Leche League for more information.

water for what? hiccups? my daughter got hiccups all the time and the dr. said that a few swigs of it to clear her of them was ok at a couple of weeks. distilled water only! but until later there is no need for it until baby starts some real food. good luck!

So many arguments with this. I actually gave it to my son when he was a few weeks old to either settle him or get rid of his hiccups.

He was also constipated alot and water helped....hes seven months old now and hates the stuff!!!

The first thing an infant is given in the hospital is water... so it should be fine at any time... as long as you mostly give him or her there formula's!!!
