A felony is a charge for which punishment of more than a year is specifically written into the law. However, on a slew of misdemeanors you could be sentenced to more than a year. Likewise, depending on any number of legislative or court programs for felonies, with probation you could actually serve less than a year in prison for a felony. This all varies state to state - so you need to check locally. BTW, if you were not charged/tried for a felony you cannot be convicted of one.

Every crime has its minimum and maximum punishment under the law, so this could be possible.
