Remember the old saying, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". Mexico uses the United States to export its poverty problem. Why is Mexico poor while Canada is well off? Answer: rampant Mexican corruption. Mexico is rife with corruption and incompetence. This is a vicious cycle. A lot of businesses don't even want to take advantage of the low wages down there because everything takes forever, and they have to bribe everyone they deal with. Mexico should be a wealthy country. It has two beautiful coast lines which can support huge influxes of tourism. They are strategically situated for international shipping. They have huge oil reserves. They don't have the oil consumption needs of the U.S. and Canada who have to expend a lot of energy heating homes, schools, and businesses in winter. Imagine civil unrest like a pressure cooker. Unless the pressure builds to a certain level, you won't hear the whistle blow. The same concept applies to the Mexican poverty problem. As long as Mexicans here in the U.S. keep sending back billions of dollars every year to their relatives back home, and as long as Mexicans can easily escape their situation at home by just walking across a border, Mexico will never be under enough pressure to implement real socio-economic changes. The sad truth is, unless the U.S. gets tough with Mexico, the situation will not change. The corruption in Mexico that prevents change is too ingrained in their national character. There is an old Nick Lowe song. The lyrics say, "You've got to be cruel to be kind..." Well, we have to approach Mexico with tough love, like we've done with China. We have to use a carrot and stick approach. Tell them to reform their government, shore up their economy, get away from ineffecient subsidies for dying national businesses, etc. Only then will Mexicans enjoy the prosperity they seek.

Convince everyone in the US to take economics classes. That way the US could go back to being capitalistic, and making money would be easier.

Move to a place (such as Silicon Valley) where my job type pays significantly more money.

Winwon -- if you are so severely underpaid, give your boss an ultimatum and if he doesn't oblige, then quit immediately and get another job. That is how us men make more money, and if you women are too risk averse to do that, then you deserve what you get.

I would approach my boss and remind him that my predecessor made 35K more then I do. My responsibilities run much deeper and the fact that I am a woman should not make a difference in my current pay scale. What do you think about this one?
