Firewire (also called IEEE 1394) is a port for transferring large amounts of data (usually video) or for backups. It transfers data faster than a USB 2.0 which is why it is popular for large file transfers. If your computer does not have one installed you can get a PCI card with the firewire ports. It is NOT a NIC though.

Firewire is a type of interface. It is like USB. the standard is also called IEEE 1394. Alot of digital video cameras use firewire.
