I will agree. Those white blocks of food are worthless. I just read a horror story about a guy who went on vacation for Thanksgiving and asked a guy he knew from the pet store to take care of his (prize) fish. He called the care guy after he got to his destination. No answer. Called him later that day. No answer. Called him the next day. No answer. Called his doorman to see if the guy had been there. Nope. He hadn't. So, by now, the guy was freakin' out about his prize fish and couldn't stand it and flew back home. He got there in time to find his fish almost literally frying to death from the heat too high. (Come to find out later, the care guy had actually been there, noticed the heat was too high, but said he had to be somewhere else, so decided he would deal with it later! duh....!) Luckily, the guy knew what to do and performed emergency treatment and saved his fish. As soon as things were almost under control, the care guy strolls in. Needless to say, the guy is suing him now. So, lesson is, even when you think you can trust someone, you can't, so if you choose to have someone take care of them, you'd better know for certain without a doubt that they will. I, myself, always opt for the automatic feeders. The food amount fed is adjustable. Test it out before you leave to make sure you know when it's going to turn on and how much it will feed. That has always been my safest and most secure option.

You get an auto feeder from your pet stockist, they are called fishamatics. You also need to make sure that all piping is sound and turn down the thermostat just below normal. I would also recommend that you have a friend or relative that can see to them should there be a power cut. The worst case scenario would be the failure of the pump. So just get someone else to pop in a couple of times for you. Good question, enjoy your holiday.

time released food or 'white-block' food can be deadly for your fish because the block dissolves slowly, releasing food. if not enough is eaten your fish are in danger. you might want 2 have someone feed them while your gone-you can make pre-arranged packets, or show him/her how to feed. Some fish can go 4 a week or more w/o food, but I can't recommend this 2 you.

You can use timer`s for the lights to switch on and off
You can also buy feeders to release a certain amount of food
If you ask someone to feed the fish for you
Make sure they know not to overfeed them

Have a lovely time

Preferably, you would have someone feed them for you while you're gone, but if that's not an option, they do sell white blocks of food for this occastion, its not the best for the fish, but it will get them through.
