I have a hp pavilion zt3000 and have had multiple problems with multiple hard drives. If I close the top and carry it around it has crashed the computer more than once using different hard drives. Is this a hard drive issue or something else?

The hard drive is spinning at a few thousand rpm while it is on and the heads are moving back and forth across it a fraction of the thickness of a human hair above the surface. If the heads hit the surface, it leaves a lovely scar and wipes out data. When you shift a spinning wheel it has interesting torque on it, think of experiments with spinning bicycle wheels in school science.
The hard drive has suspension features to protect it as much as possible when it is off.
Ya, I would say you are destroying hard drives carrying it around running.

Unless the notebook encorporates a hard disk shock system such as what newer Thinkpads use, than carrying a powered on notebook around can have dedtrimental effects on the hard disk.

You should place the notebook in standby or hibernation mode before moving it.

Is it really on or is it hibernating? should be fine hibernating but not on and running or stand by or just closed. Putting in a laptop bag running is never a good idea could cause overheating which is never good. hope this helps
