Pressure from the family to do so. I can understand supporting one's own children and perhaps elderly parents, but I would have a problem once it starts stretching out to siblings, cousins, etc.

Mostly filipinos working in other countries send most of their salaries back home for their family, specially for basic needs. These workers make sure that their kids will have a better education for better future. While they are earning they make sure to invest on things while they still have strength to work hard. They usually buy lands, houses and invest on some businesses, coz most filipino workers would want to come home soon with their families and their own businesses. It is really not for themselves that they work abroad for money, it is really for their loved ones that they sacrifice. But most Filipinos are really investing on education, so respect is worthy specially from those developed countries. These workers are keeping their prides. Even the educated ones will go for even domestic helpers abroad for better salary for the family. Dont they deserve a little more respect than saying anything else???

It's actually a culture thing. It doesn't happen only in UK, but in Japan, US, Italy, and everywhere there is a Filipino Overseas Worker. It basically stems from poverty, but mainly because of the idea that the "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" and that other lands are "lands of milk and honey". These Filipino Overseas Workers work their butts off, and send money because, believe it or not, it is expected of them. Even when they start a family of their own in these foreign lands, they feel blessed than their poor relatives back in the Philippines, and feel obligated to help out. Meanwhile, the families back in the Philippines do not realize how hard these Overseas Workers are working.

many of the filipinos I know say they send it home for several reasons, the first is to help support family, to pay for a good education for their siblings a good private education there only costs a couple of £000 a year, another reason they buy land as quickly as they can afford then have a house built and as you can buy a plot and build a nice home for £20000 it doesn't take so long as they live as cheaply as possible with some couples both being nurses they can earn in excess of £40000 p.a most seem to have retirement plans by the time they are 50 the latest and as the cost of living is so low it is quite possible to do the average well paid filipino earns £2.50 a day some less and another reason is so they can save to get away from our miserable winter climate, I am english and I love the way of life there and I don't want to be here working when I am 70, so I hope to be off in another 5 years when I am 55

Filipinos, being so close-knit to their families, send money back home not only to show the superficial reason of financially supporting their family members back home but to also show their love and utmost moral support to them. Money sent to the Philippines is generally spent for kids' education, shelter, food and clothing. Mind you, some Filipino caregivers in the UK I know have compared their houses with that of their clients'/patients' and realized that they have bigger and more luxurious houses back in the Philippines than their clients'/patients'. Sounds ironic but really some Overseas Filipinos doing dirty jobs in foreign countries have saved enough and have built their own mansions, have bought luxurious cars and started family businesses.

If you will visit there...you will understand the amount of poverty there. People to go there, usually stay at resorts but if you get out and look around outside the resort you will understand how poor people are and sometime they live on a bowl of rice. So, anything the outside filipino send there....helps them a lot.

It is a very poor country, when you see...you will understand.

Why do ther UK and similar rich nations hire thousands of Filipinos?

Its called demand and supply, a division of wealth for some honest labor.

God Bless the OFWs.

I believe they have much stronger family ties and than us and children are brought up to support their parents in their old age. After all, they don't have a pension scheme, children are raised in a family unit to help and support their family. Only £5 a month makes a huge difference to the lives of their relatives.
