Avro Arrow Stragetic Plan in the West Sputnik?

I dont understand how it helped cancel the avro arrow with the satilitte
sputnik etc

The sputnik was only a side effect to cancel the arrow . The real reason was that the development went serious over there budget.
The Arrow was so unlucky that on his day off his maiden flight , which had to be a way point in his career , the sputnik was launched and this news came on the front pages in staid of the Arrow.
Also many of the engineers that work on the arrow where lured away to NASA with higher fees because the Americans ' seeing that they where behind in the space race with the launch of the sputnik, where doing ever thing to get in front of the race
