Just been told that in some places people in jail have to pay for each day they spend there. I did 6 months just recently and never heard about this. How can you be expected to pay if you can't work? Does this really happen?

I have heard of this in Alaska. It's to stop temporary workers from trying to spend a night in jail instead of being out in the cold.

Of course you are charged, what we should support you while you are in jail? There are jobs in jail and since you are released now you will have to pay your fines, costs and restitution fees to the county which in turn pay for your prison stay. Nothing is free.

Sorry to say, but yes this is true. In Norfolk, Va inmates are required to pay .33 per meal/ .99 a day. It does not matter if they eat the food or not they have to pay. Not only that, but if you receive canteen/commissary money they take a dollar a day from that for that purpose and if you have any negative balance of money owed for your stay.

Hope this helps...

I have never heard of jails or prisons doing that but it can be possible, i had to pay court fees for my son who got in trouble and if he would have done time in Juvenal hall i would of had to pay for each day .

Yes...in there area that I live in it's like $20 a day.

I don't know...I think that would promote more crime seeing as how they probably can't afford to pay it.

Like you said they aren't working...but when it comes the the government that stuff doesn't matter. They do not care how much money you have...as long as they gte theirs.

Yes, Where i go visit allot you have to pay your board. Really the system wants you for ever! See you pay for your board like working folks do. Honestly it is reasonable. But then impossible.
