Ebay is good, but I would only deal with dealers with a very high rating and protect yourself with a credit card. Paypal is almost worthless for protection (I got screwed before). Make sure that they have a return policy. Read the ads carefully for payments they take and make sure you've played the model that you want. Remember with ebay you're dealing with people so if you're nervous about sending money, search for people close to you and go check it out with your dad before the auction closes. Then they are happy because you can pay them cash. I've bought tons of stuff on ebay and with instruments, I've even resold them for a profit! Beware of off brand names, they say Stratocaster, but it's not a fender and plays more like a blender. Notice the condition carefully in the pictures, especially with used items.

Other than ebay. I like Musician's Friend. Safer than ebay and they take credit. They'll pay to return stuff if you're unhappy (not always with ebay). They have good sales and you can search by price for the accessories / instruments that you want. You can also search by manufacturer and look through their clearance section. I've sent several things back to them without a problem. If you don't mind "dinged" stuff they even have a scratch and dent section. They have tons of accessories under it's own catagory, plus they often have free shipping deals on many items.

Brands to consider which are inexpensive:
Dean, Switch, Daisy Rock (very cute), Takamine, and some Fender (Not the Chinese ones, go with Mexican or Japanese or USA). Some Epiphone are ok, but I'd play them individually (in person to check for quality issues). The main thing is to go with an instrument that feels comfortable to you and your body type. Kinda like dating, haha.

There are other sites out there; AMS and Guitar Center have good sites.

Peace,
B

E-bay! You can find EVERYTHING there in a big variety of prices, from used in exelent condition (usually), or brand new.
